Intranet 2.0 and enterprise social networks

15 February 2023 by Alison Newman

DWG’s new research report ‘Intranet 2.0 and enterprise social networks: How they’ve changed the way we work’ takes a look back at how ‘Intranet 2.0’ technologies and enterprise social networks (ESNs) have been adopted in organizations.

Beginning in 2008, enterprise social tools like Yammer (and later Slack, Chatter and others) began to show up in organizations. Often introduced organically by individual employees or teams, these would usher in the era of Intranet 2.0.

The report looks at how ESNs have continued to evolve and the extent to which they’ve changed how we work. It also considers whether early expectations have been realized, asks what barriers there have been, and considers some ways in which digital workplace practitioners can help on the next stage of the journey.

Examples and insights from The Coca-Cola Company, Comcast, Southwest Airlines and MetLife are featured.

About DWG research

The Digital Workplace Group (DWG) carries out research into best practice in intranet and portal deployment. Covering the hottest topics in the intranet world, the studies we undertake are rooted in practical examples from among DWG member organizations as well as leading non-member companies. The results of this in-depth research act as a basis for decision-making, a source of ideas, and the basis for rich interactions between participants at DWG meetings. Generally, members are given exclusive access to our findings, although we do from time to time make a report available to non-members.
